From one southerner or to another, I understand completely. We recently had our grandchildren visiting and they told us how much they really appreciated their vacation here. It was chill and filled with things like rolling down the hill and looking for crayfish in the local stream. We had so much fun and did so Little. Bedtime didn’t mean much when fireflies needed to be caught, and the night sky needed to be scooped for bats.
🥹😍reading this made my heart so full! Those are the memories that your grandchildren will look back on for years and years to come, I just know it. And I know they must miss you too! Thank you so much for reading, I’m so happy you had that time together
This piece was beautiful! I grew up in South Carolina but moved to New York seven years ago and you perfectly worded the thoughts I have while visiting home. I spent hours dreaming of leaving my hometown and living in New York, and now I sometimes find myself missing the town I once wanted to escape.
Thank you so much!!! I completely understand and resonate with what you said- I am always missing where I’m not and that’s just such a hard thing to experience ❤️
Oh my goodness! I am also from the south (Florida Panhandle) but moved to Los Angeles! I sooooo deeply connected with this piece! Over the last few years, I’ve gone home for extended periods of time and have those same musings of an alternate timeline where I never left. Distance has made my heart grow fonder, and there truly is nothing like a summer back down south ❤️
No way!!! I’m so touched reading this and so happy that this resonated with you. I always think about things like this, and I agree that distance makes the heart grow fonder for sure ❤️ we are so in sync!!
loved this piece!! homecoming is always a weird regressive experience and even though my parents live within driving distance i still feel 15 when i go there
thank you so much!! you are so right- it’s such a weird regressive experience no matter how far it is, I always feel the same :’) thank you for reading 🫶🫶
i'm currently back home in California for the month so this was beyond relatable🤧 like you said, it feels like everything has changed and yet nothing truly has.
and as a fellow NYC girl, i know that it's where i belong but at the same time, it's so nice to be sleeping in my childhood bed again, eating my mom's cooking, and getting to just slow down again. an amazing read as always🤍
